Project 1-Key Artwork

Week 4(05/05/2020)

For the project 1, we are assigned to create a key artwork which is similar to a logo design. Key artwork is a combination of type and visual, concept and the purpose should exist behind the key artwork. This key artwork will be used on the next collateral design project which is Project 2. We need to use visual elements/graphic elements with a title to create a impactful and attractive design.
Some of the instructions were given:

1. Choose one topic from the three topics used in Typographic System exercise.
(1) All Ripped Up: Punk Influences on Design
(2) The ABC's of: The Bauhaus and Design Theory
(3) Russian Constructivism and Graphic Design

2. Choose one of the 10 typefaces given by lecturer.

3. Create our works using Adobe Illustrator.

I choose All Ripped Up: Punk Influences on Design for this project. Before starting design, I read the article to understand it. Below is my understanding in this topic.(Fig 1.01)

Fig 1.01 Notes

I decide to create a key artwork that express the breaking of design's rule. Below is my sketch.
(Fig 1.02)

After sketching my idea, I start to digitize it in Adobe Illustrator. Below are the attempts.

Week 5(12/05/2020)
I shows Mr Vinod my design, he thinks my design is too focus on graphical element. I should remember that typography is the most important part in this particular project. My font choice is not related to punk, I have 80% of graphical elements but only 20% of typography. I should research more in punk, and start with black and white to make sure I can focus on my types.
After receiving feedback, I proceed to another design. Below is the fourth attempt. (Fig 1.06)

Week 6(19/05/2020)
Mr Vinod thinks my fourth attempt design still not a key artwork yet. He advises me only focus on the words first, do research, choose typeface, and start compose. This time I decide to use only black and white for my design. I try to focus more on the layout and reduce the size of fist. Below are the fifth and sixth attempt. (Fig 1.07-1.08) I try to focus on the impact feeling by arranging and associating the words.

Fig 1.08 Sixth attempt

Week 7(26/05/2020)
No class due to public holiday.

Week 8(02/06/2020)
I showed Mr Vinod my designs, he thinks the fifth attempt's fist looks lack of imagination. The arrangement of the words are not appropriate because reader can't figure out where to start read it. The letter "N" of "PUNK" should bigger than "K" but smaller than "P". Under his feedback, I edited my design, below is the seventh attempt.(Fig 1.09)

Fig 1.09 Seventh attempt

I showed Mr Vinod my seventh attempt, he thinks that it is much better compare to the previous one.
Overall looks more balance but he suggested me to changes the places of the word "INFLUENCE" and "ON DESIGN". Below is the final outcome of my key artwork. (Fig 1.10)

FEEDBACK
Week 6(19/05/2020)
General Feedback: When begin the key artwork, we need to explore by sketching. When hand is working, brain is processing come out idea. Then we can identity the possible idea and develop the font. We should use black and white initially so we can focus on typography. Key artwork is not a poster, it is almost like a logo. We can refer to Fahmi Rezza's punk style. Group 1 are tasked to create a lecture presentation at week 8 about Interactivity and Motion in Typography--Dynamic Type Kinetic and Interactive.

Specific Feedback: Mr Vinod said I need to express the punk typographical. It's not suppose to be just visual or graphic alone. My work have 80% graphic and only 20% typography. I need to study the typefaces that are used in punk.

Week 7(26/05/2020)
No feedback was given because there is no class due to public holiday.

Week 8(02/06/2020)
General Feedback: For the collateral task, Mr Vinod advises us to start with poster, then proceed to tote bag, clothes, and etc. Web design should be the last. Utilize the skill we learnt from the previous tasks into the collateral design.

Specific Feedback: Mr Vinod thinks the fist is lack of imagination, and it is hard to figure out
which is the sentence need to be read firstly. Make the letter "N" of the word "PUNK" bigger
than "K" but smaller than "P". Under Mr Vinod's feedback, I edited the work. He said it is much better compare to the previous one, he said overall looks more balance, he thinks the places of the words "INFLUENCE" and "ON DESIGN" should exchanged.

REFLECTION
Week 6(19/05/2020)
Experience: I always hope my work can be approved by lecturers at the first time I show them. However, reality is not that smooth going. Thinking on another aspect, the feedbacks given by lecturers are an opportunity to improve ourselves better.

Observation: Most of my classmates' key artworks not approved by lecturer. We are having hard time to understand what is key artwork and how it suppose to looks like.

Findings: I find that the typefaces I chose for my design always not satisfy lecturer. I still need more study on the function of different typefaces.

Week 7(26/05/2020)
No class due to public holiday.

Week 8(02/06/2020)
Experience: I feels good that I gradually grasp what lecturers wan for my design through their feedback. My motivation is increasing if I am on the right way.

Observation: Some of my classmates' design still rejected by lecturer, I feel worrying about them because we need to proceed to next project. Without a proper key artwork is really hard to move forward.

Experience: My design is slightly different compare to my classmates' designs. If my design is on the right way, I think it is good that my design doesn't looks generally.

Week 5(12/05/2020)-Week 6(19/05/2020)
Book Title: Basic Typography 02: Using Type
Author: Michael Harkins
Fig 1.11 Basic Typography 02: Using Type

From this book, I learned that when we designing for print, the types of colors used are very important. Colors for print should be specified as cyan, magenta, yellow and black (or the key color)-otherwise known as CMYK. Alternatively, 'spot', 'solid' or 'special' colors should be specified, such those of the Pantone Matching System or 'PMS colors'. This is because work printed by offset litho must be 'color separated' and each color is then printed in sequence. If you have color within your design, this will be made up from percentages of CMYK overprinted in combination, unless you are using solid or single colors.

Spot colors are individual inks that give a specific color related to proprietary matching systems. These colors may often be difficult to achieve using the 'four-color process' of CMYK due to the specific pigments that they are made from. However, a design may actually be enhanced by the use of a limited color palette. A 'two-color' design that uses one spot color and black, for example, can appear very effective; it will also reduce costs in terms of litho printing, as fewer separated printing plates will ultimately be needed. Two Pantone Hexachrome inks are used in the poster below to achieve a brighter result. (Fig 1.12)

Week 7(26/05/2020)
Book Title: Basics Typography 02: Using Type
Author: Michael Harkins

Fig 1.13 Basics Typography 02: Using Type
This week, I proceed to read this book for my further reading. I learned some information about baseline grids which is a layout allow for an extra level of control within typographic layout. Using a baseline grid is most useful for controlling line spacing and the alignment of text or body copy within a design. It is the value for the leading of the type that is used to specify the distance between lines of the baseline grid. For example, if we were to use 10pt TIMES type with 12pt leading, then the 12pt measurement for the leading would be the value that would be set for the baseline grid.

Like all grid system, the baseline grid is not used to dictate the development of design, but is rather used as an aid to help with consistency within the work. This kind of grid is particularly beneficial when dealing with lots of text and when using multiple columns. The baseline grid makes the alignment of columns across a spread and throughout a publication an easier and more accurate task. This is sometimes referred to as 'cross-alignment'. The example below shows how the baseline grid helps with alignment (cross-alignment) of the baselines across text columns and additional type matter.
