Project 2
For our project 2, we need to explore some spots studying various visuals, sound, smells, etc to make a self-portrait. For this self-portrait project, we need to ask ourselves:
1.Who am I? 2. How has culture affected me? 3 How do others see me? 4. How do I see myself?
We were encouraged to go for a mixture of traditional and contemporary places. So I went to China Town which is in Kuala Lumpur. When I reached china town, you can see there is a lot of stalls and I heard a lot of voice that asking people to buy their goods. I can said that, this is the culture of my hometown, we oftenly call a place like this "pasar" which means market. China town was decorated by a lot of Chinese lanterns, you can feel the color of Chinese. Also, you can see different races are selling goods. So I take some photos that show mixture of different cultures in a place.
When I looking at this place, I suddenly have the answers of that 4 four questions.
1. I am a Malaysian
2. The cultures of Malaysia make me looks like not only a Chinese, I am a Malaysian.
3.& 4. Either others or myself, I look like a mixture of cultures. I can celebrate different festival with different races in Malaysia. I am not only a Chinese, not Malay or Indian, I am a pure Malaysian.
For this project, I decided to make a self-portrait that forms by these photo I take.

When I change the effect of lantern and kite to hard mix, lantern become red and kite become gree. These color have auspicious meaning in each cultures.(IMG 1.04) Also, I use Indian oil lamp as my nose so I can show the main three races of Malaysia.(IMG 1.05)

I change my self-portrait and make it look easier so I can express the meaning easily rather than the complex and messy work.
FEEDBACK
Lecturer said she didn't realise there is a face in the middle after I explained. She said the final work is better than the previous one. Also, the face at the middle is obvious.
